Until today, very few of us had heard of Flynn Downes. But what is the midfielder like and what do we need to know about his medical at West Ham?
Lucky for you, we’ve put it all in one article for you to enjoy.
Who is Flynn Downes?
Flynn Downes is a 23-year-old midfielder that currently is under contract with Swansea until 2025.
Born in Brentwood, Flynn played for England U19 and U20. He has managed an incredible pass completion rate of 93%, beating Declan Rice by 2% and making his passing the most accurate out of all midfielders in the English Leagues.
His ability has not gone unnoticed, with ex West Ham goalkeeper, Jimmy Walker saying: “Told this kid 2 years ago at Ipswich he’d replace Declan in a few seasons… thankfully, it looks like they can play together.”
The Club has a medical booked with Flynn in the next 24 hours, and providing he passes, this will secure his future at West Ham.
Where does Flynn Downes play?
Flynn Downes has played predominantly as a central midfielder, playing 69 games in this position throughout his career. This is followed by 42 appearances as a defensive midfielder and 23 as an attacking midfielder.
He’s also played four times as CB and once at right mid.
Of the 76 Championship games in his career, Flynn has scored 2 goals and made 3 assists, suggesting he is more defensive in his style of play.
Out of 45 Championship games for Swansea last season, he made the starting eleven 24 times and played the full 90’ in 26 games. Of the games he played in, only three times was he given less than 45’ on the pitch.
What will Flynn Downes cost West Ham?
Flynn Downes is expected to cost £9m plus £3m in add-ons.
What can we expect from Flynn Downes?
Measuring 5’8” in height, Downes may not have the same height as Rice and Soucek, however he certainly seems to have the ability to come in as a strong contender for the CDM position.
It’s the perfect time to sign a new CDM, giving them time to train up alongside Rice and create healthy competition for the position.
