Transfer Window Signings: Jonathan David

Today, West Ham have been linked with Lille striker, Jonathan David, with Moyes reportedly requesting to open negotiations with him. This article outlines everything you need to know about the player, as well as the likelihood of him signing for West Ham in the January transfer window.

Meet Jonathan David

Jonathan David is a Canadian international striker, currently playing for Lille in Ligue 1. Aged only 21, his future certainly looks bright, with his stats showcasing his potential.

I should probably mention at this point that Jonathan David is currently the top striker in Ligue 1, ahead of Kylian Mbappe.

Jonathan David Stats

2021/22 season

This season, David has scored 11 goals in 18 games in Ligue 1 and scored 3 goals in 6 games in the Champions League. He has featured as both a centre-forward and secondary striker behind former West Ham target, Burak Yilmaz.

Here’s the breakdown by position in all competitions:

  • This season as a secondary striker: 6 goals in 15 games
  • This season as a centre-forward: 9 goals in 10 games

2020/21 season

Last season, David scored 13 goals and got 3 assists in 37 Ligue 1 games. Again, he played as both a centre-forward and secondary striker.

Here’s the breakdown by position in all competitions:

  • Last season as a secondary striker: 4 goals and 1 assist in 16 games
  • Last season as a centre-forward: 9 goals and 4 assists in 30 games

Why could Jonathan David be a great signing for West Ham?

Jonathan David has the potential to be a fantastic signing for West Ham. The young talent could provide competition for Antonio and instead of being just a back-up striker, he could be a longer term solution that plays a key role in the future of the club.

It is no surprise that David has been linked with some of Europe’s top teams, with his ability to play in either position, as well as showing strength on the ball, having a clinical finish and being able to use both feet.

What is Jonathan David worth?

Jonathan David is valued at £45m by TransferMarkt, however reports from The Guardian suggest he could be available for as little as £25m. Personally, I reckon this is incredibly unlikely as Lille paid £24.3m for him in August 2020.

How likely is the signing?

Lille are currently 11th in Ligue 1 and are in the knockout stages of the Champions League, making it unlikely they will be willing to release David unless their demands are met.

There are also rumours that he’s on Real Madrid’s radar, as well Arsenal, Liverpool and Barcelona (who might not be able to afford him). However, we offer the advantage that he’s more likely to start and play games with us than he would be at the other teams.
