Standing at 6 ft 2, RSC Anderlecht player Leander Dendoncker is on West Ham’s watch-list, and is one of Hollseey’s most exciting prospects for the January transfer window.
A defensive midfielder who can also play as a centre-back or in central midfield, Dendoncker is versatile. With the ability to play with his left and right foot, the Belgian has power and accuracy, particularly when taking the ball from defence and whipping it out to the wingers. Given West Ham’s recent struggle in midfield to hold possession, Dendoncker looks to be a positive addition to the squad, filling in the gap between our defence and forwards.
Fitting in well with our style of play, Dendoncker’s skill for picking out targets would create the opportunity to properly utilise many more of our players. While we currently tend to play either Hernandez or Carroll, the 22-year-old would bring more possibilities, freeing Carroll, Hernandez and Arnautovic up without having to drop so deep to get the ball. Leaving Chicharito less isolated, we could support his style of play, getting the ball into the box for him to do what he does best, tapping it in.
Filling in the midfield, Dendoncker could be a potential replacement for Kouyate, who has looked out of form this season, or a future replacement for 30-year-old Mark Noble, as well as being able to slot into defence, having made a successful transition into his position from centre back.
Helping his team to the Belgian title last season as well as having 19 appearances for Anderlecht this season, there is no denying the impact Dendoncker has had at the Belgian club, making him a promising target for West Ham this transfer window.
Whether Anderlecht are willing to sell the talented youngster remains in question, having chosen to keep him on board in the summer despite links with Manchester United and Everton. Anderlecht sit 13 points behind current First Division A leaders, Club Brugge and look keen to continue their current form.
West Ham are rumoured to have a bid of around £20million ready, should Dendoncker be available.
